This is one of my favorite old times songs. I’ve arranged it here in Dm to fit in with the melodic range of the ukulele. It’s more common to find this song arranged in Am or Em.
There’s really only 8 measures to this song. The first 8 measures of the tab are a simple version, which includes only melody notes and basic clawhammer strum. In the second 8 measures I’ve added hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides to make the sound a little more interesting.
In the 11th measure, use your ring finger to play the 3rd fret of the E string. In the 12th measure slide up to the 5th fret; now you are in 3rd position. In the 13th measure use your index finger to play the 3rd fret of the A string.
In the 14th measure, use your middle finger to play the 3rd fret of the # string. As you do so, place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the C string and your ring finger on the 4th fret of the C string. Now you’re ready for the pull-off.
In the 15th measure, use your middle finger to play the 2nd fret of the C string; then slide up to the 4th fret. Keep your middle finger there, and use your index finger for the E string 3rd fret pull-off, then pull-off the 4th fret of the C string with your middle finger. Hammer back on the 2nd fret of the C string with your middle finger in the 16th measure.
Here’s my performance. I play the simple version twice, then the advanced version twice. I’m playing my Firefly banjolele for a change. I stuck a bit of Styrofoam under the banjo head for a “plunkier” sound.
