This Train Revised Again

Near as I can tell there are at least 3 songs with this name… probably more.

There’s the Woody Guthrie version…

and the Indigo Girls take on it…

And then there’s the most obscure version – a children’s song derived from an old spiritual. I learned this version of the song when I took my son to Music Together. That version is the one I’ve arranged here for clawhammer ukulele.

This is really a tune in 2 parts (8 measures each). The tab also includes a third part which is just the first part + embellishments.

The first part is fairly simple, just playing the melody on the downbeats. I’ve included some double thumbing in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th measures, but it is really optional.

In the second part (9th measure), use your index finger to form a half-bar at the fifth fret. Then slide down to the third fret (11th measure), back up to the fifth fret (13th measure), back down to the 3rd fret (15th measure), and finally return to the home position in the 16th measure. Use your ring finger to achieve the pull-offs in measures 10, 12, and 14.

The third part can be played interchangeably with the first part, adding left-hand embellishments in the form of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. I use my ring finger for the pull-offs in measures 18 and 22. In measure 20 I’m fretting the C-no-3rd with my middle and ring fingers. I use my pinky finger for the pull off; then I use my ring finger for the following slide.

The words for this song are

This train is bound for glory

Children get on board

No more weeping and a-wailing
No more weeping and a-wailing
No more weeping and a-wailing
Children get on board

Here’s my performance of this tune. My thumb thumping is really out of control when I play at this speed – something for me to work on.
